Since launching Immigrant Connection, we have seen our church become a safe space for immigrants in our community. On Sunday mornings, some of those who have received services in our legal clinic are now joining us for worship. On Monday and Thursday nights, individuals are connecting in our building to teach and learn English. Each Wednesday evening several Spanish primary speaking parents drop off their kids for Club Splash and then hang out in the Parents Club in the chapel. At the House of Hope, every other Sunday night, a Spanish small group is meeting to listen to God and study scripture. God is at work in this ministry.
As this grows, we want to College Wesleyan Church (CWC) to listen to what God is saying and to know how to engage and respond to those who have moved to our community from far away places. These people are our neighbors, and God, through his word, has a lot to say about how we are to welcome them in and love them.
As a part of the “Ask to Listen” focus, Outreach at CWC is putting together a listening guide for
Lent. “Radical Hospitality: A 40-Day Listening Guide,” is a devotional and prayer guide that will walk participants through some of the passages in scripture that speak to the themes of biblical hospitality, welcoming the stranger, and loving our neighbors. Forty individuals have written
daily devotionals on different passages from both the Old Testament and the New Testament. Each devotional will be accompanied with reflection questions and prayer prompts.
Our desire is that through the forty days, God will speak to participants through his Word, through each devotional, and through his Spirit. At the end of Lent, we hope participants will know how God wants them to respond to these issues and those impacted by them.
“Radical Hospitality: A 40-Day Listening Guide” will be available in the weeks leading up to Ash Wednesday in the Outreach area of the church atrium. Our goal is to have at least 20 individuals who will commit to walk through the guide daily during Lent. Following Lent, we would like to gather that group back together to hear how God has spoken to them and how God has called them to respond.
If you would like to commit to be a part of this group and have a copy of the guide reserved for you, contact Josh Ruiz, our Immigrant Connection Director, at firstname.lastname@example.org.
