Assigned Scripture

 John 11:38-44

38 Jesus was still angry as he arrived at the tomb, a cave with a stone rolled across its entrance. 39 “Roll the stone aside,” Jesus told them.

But Martha, the dead man’s sister, protested, “Lord, he has been dead for four days. The smell will be terrible.”

40 Jesus responded, “Didn’t I tell you that you would see God’s glory if you believe?” 41 So they rolled the stone aside. Then Jesus looked up to heaven and said, “Father, thank you for hearing me. 42 You always hear me, but I said it out loud for the sake of all these people standing here, so that they will believe you sent me.” 43 Then Jesus shouted, “Lazarus, come out!” 44 And the dead man came out, his hands and feet bound in graveclothes, his face wrapped in a headcloth. Jesus told them, “Unwrap him and let him go!”

Ephesians 4:21-24

21 Since you have heard about Jesus and have learned the truth that comes from him, 22 throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception. 23 Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. 24 Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy.

Colossians 3:12-14

12 Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. 13 Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others.14 Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony.

Group Response

If salvation is like passing from death to life (Jn 5:24; 1 Jn 3:14), then discipleship is the practice of resurrection with the hope of one day being fully alive.

Discussion Questions

1. Today we called salvation “the process of passing from Death to Life.” How does this change the way you think of your own salvation?

2. If we think of ourselves as being raised to life, and we think of our sins as grave clothes, what are you still wearing that no longer fits the resurrected life? What are you still trying to “take off?”What do you need to “put on?”

3. Let’s learn from each other: What are the best practices for “putting on the garments of salvation (Isaiah 61:10)?” What’s working for you?
