Assigned Scripture

John 1:35-42

35 The following day John was again standing with two of his disciples. 36 As Jesus walked by, John looked at him and declared, “Look! There is the Lamb of God!” 37 When John’s two disciples heard this, they followed Jesus.

38 Jesus looked around and saw them following. “What do you want?” he asked them.

They replied, “Rabbi” (which means “Teacher”), “where are you staying?”

39 “Come and see,” he said. It was about four o’clock in the afternoon when they went with him to the place where he was staying, and they remained with him the rest of the day.

40 Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of these men who heard what John said and then followed Jesus. 41 Andrew went to find his brother, Simon, and told him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means “Christ”[a]).

42 Then Andrew brought Simon to meet Jesus. Looking intently at Simon, Jesus said, “Your name is Simon, son of John—but you will be called Cephas” (which means “Peter”.

Group Response

Following the weekly gathering, you’re invited to respond to the service by engaging in group discussion.

The grace of Jesus toward Simon painted a picture of who he would become: Peter. We all need this kind of imaginative grace from God that is the power to change us and the projection of who we can become in Him. As we receive this imagination of grace from God, we will offer the same gift to those around us by (1) giving a new name (2) an opportunity to get use to it, (3) freedom to be tested and (4) second and third chances.

Discussion Questions

1. What is your emotional reaction to the idea of God’s imagination for you? How does the idea make you feel?

2. Can you identify your story with the four major movements we see in Peter’s life? (Your new name, your early opportunities, your testing and your redemption opportunities.)

3. What is your biggest barrier as you seek to offer God’s imagination of grace to others?

4. Take a moment to share about a person whose imagination over your life changed your story. Who was Jesus to you?
